At some time in our lives we will all have to make a decision regarding the long term care of our parents or another loved one. In this essay we will discuss the differences between two different health care facilities, Nursing Homes and Assisted Living. The two facilities have some similarities but many differences as well. The main focus in determining where to place your loved one depends on the level of care needed. A nursing home accepts all insurance plans. This type of facility cares for those who are dependent on most activities of daily living, also known as ADLS. They need help with bathing, dressing themselves, personal cares, eating, medication assistant and elopement risks. They also take residents who are terminally ill, short term intensive rehabilitation and long term end of life care. Nursing homes also accept residents that are dependent on ventilators to live, people who have tube feedings for survival, residents with alzheimers disease, who are bed ridden and more than one person transfer.
