Laboratory Report-Experimental Stress Analysis of notched bars using strain gauges or photoelasticity Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
1. Introduction
There were two individual experiments involved in this laboratory session. Students were grouped into two teams and each team performed only one experiment and observed the other. After that, experimental results were exchanged between the two groups. In the first experiment, a notched bar under a tensile stress was investigated using strain gauges, whereas in the second, two different notched bar specimens were experimentally analyzed using the method of photoelasticity.
2. Objectives
To familiarise the students with some typical techniques of experimental stress analysis
To obtain stresses and strains in a notched bar specimen using one of the two available experimental techniques: strain gauging and photoelasticity
To determine experimentally the longitudinal and transverse strain distribution across a notched bar specimens and hence to deduce the phenomenon of stress concentration under loading conditions
To qualitatively compare the two experimental stress analysis techniques and the results from them with an appropriate error analysis
