Re-contextualised fairytales - Cinderella (Anne Sexton) & The Company of Wolves (Angela Carter) Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The poem Cinderella by Anne Sexton, and the short story The Company of Wolves by Angela Carter, subvert the values and paradigms of the original patriarchal fairytales, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood; appropriating them into a more contemporary context. The texts focus on the social construction of sexuality and binary oppositions, reflecting the avant-garde genre of the 1970s and early 80s when “second-wave feminists” held interest in the poststructuralist work of Michael Foucault. The postmodern feministic transpositions condemn the concept of power and wealth as dispersed by society, shifting stereotypical gender roles to challenge females as independent, self confident identities in a more egalitarian society. Sexton’s parody Cinderella reflects on the preoccupation with materialistic assets in our consumerist driven culture, forcing the responder to reassess their own values and priorities.
