There is a famous Irish Proverb that states, You cannot open a book without learning something. And although the lessons we learn in each book are different and unique, there are some stories that teach us something about ourselves, especially things we would rather not like to admit. By reading The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, I learned that even though the puritans moral justice, and harsh punishments seem cruel to us, our society today is more like them then we think.
Today, we often judge others by their appearance, not giving them a chance to prove us wrong when we already have our minds made up about them. The people who we judge dont even have a chance to prove our opinions wrong. And because of our judgmental ways, first impressions really do count. The Puritans, also had their own opinions set when they first saw someone who dressed a certain way, as well as where the person came from.
