Irwin Goldstein laid out three basic requirements for evaluating the effectiveness of a training and development program: assessment, training and development, and evaluation (Goldstein, 1974). His logic was simple in that he proposed that limited resources (time and money) be used effectively towards training and development through careful analysis of the range of variables that comprise the specific situation. Dreher and Dougherty (2001) outlined some conditions they believed were important precursors to conducting training and development. These included: a need for training, ready employees, a method-purpose congruence (the design yields needed knowledge, skills and abilities), smooth generalization (skills are transferred from the training environment to the working environment), and practical evaluation. This paper gives examples of real world companiesÂ’ efforts to affect change through careful gap analysis and focused training and touches on similarities and differences between them and a fictional company, InterClean.
