The Effects of a Mother’s Depression on her Infant Recent television advertisements for antidepressants have said, “…Depression doesn’t just hurt you, it hurts the people around you – the people who mean the most”. This couldn’t be more true if you are a mother and the main caregiver to an infant or an impressionable young child. These days, it is fairly common knowledge that women experience a flux in hormones after giving birth. This can cause the “Baby Blues” in up to 80% of new mothers (Bennett, 2003). The Baby Blues is a mild form of depression that typically will last from a few hours to three weeks after the baby is born (Bennett, 2003). Because the Baby Blues do not last for extended periods of time, it does not have long-term effects on the baby (Bennett, 2003). But what happens when a mother has severe depression? How can a mother’s persistent depression affect her baby? Research has shown that depression can cause mothers to be inconsistent with the way they care for their children (Dalton, 2001).
