The first-person perspectives and powerful messages embedded throughout the text ensure that as Josie matures, we share her journey. The novel opens our eyes and challenges the way we think about a vast array of issues, such as the social class division present in our society, the struggles of those caught between two cultures and the way in which we view ourselves. The status of different social classes in society is one issue which is prominently explored in the text. The repetition of the word rich used when Josie describes her biggest problem as “being stuck at a school dominated by rich people. Rich parents, rich grandparents” emphasises how there is a large gap between different classes in society.
