Genetic Engineering in Corn Plants Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Genetic engineering is the direct manipulation of an organism’s genes. Bt maize (corn) was created with the goal of created a maize plant that was insect resistant in the above-ground portions of the plant. The major pest to corn plants is the European Corn Borer, Ostrinia nubilalis. Maize has been transgenetically modified to produce insecticidal proteins derived from genes of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), resulting in what is known as Bt maize. The Bt is a bacterium often found in the gut of caterpillars, moths, and butterflies. The gene coding for the Bt toxin was isolated, then inserted into the corn genome, creating a transgenic insecticidal maize. The toxin causes tiny holes in the digestive tract of the larval corn borer and other plant eating insects, allowing bacteria to enter the digestive tract and multiply there, eventually killing the larva. The successful development and use of Bt maize has “proven to prevent yield loss, reduce mycotoxin levels, and reduce the use of insecticides on corn (Ortman)”.
