On the 22 January 1905 a crowd of workers numbering at 20,000, led by Father Gapon sought to bring a petition to the Tsar at the winter palace. This was an attempt to ask the tsar for improved working conditions and also to set up a constituent assembly. However they were met with hostility from the soldiers at the palace who opened fire on the crowd. 500 people were killed and many more injured. This event has been referred to as “Bloody Sunday,” and was the most immediate cause of the 1905 revolution. The people were outraged at the actions of the government and revolutionary groups stood up to start rebellion. It appeared that Nicholas II had arrived at the end of his reign. The people of Russia had completely lost faith in the Tsarist government and other revolutionary groups were gaining favour. The only thing that stopped Nicholas from being overthrown was the continued support from the army. Nevertheless Nicholas recognised the desperate need for reform and change.
