Fate vs. Free Will Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In traditional philosophy, free will is a concept referring to the belief that human behaviour or worldly order is not predestined, while fate is the predetermination of a course of events by a supreme power or agency. While the controversial issue of fate versus free will has always been open to debate, some world famous philosophers, like Socrates, Plato and William James, have succeeded in drawing conclusions on this issue. Socrates defines man’s free will in terms of possessing the ability to freely choose good from evil, based on knowledge acquired. Meanwhile, Plato’s approach holds that in order for goodness to prevail, freedom is a necessary requisite. Finally, William James argues that man’s freedom arises from his desire to believe. Therefore, based on the evidences provided by these three renowned philosophers, it can be concluded that man is empowered with the free will to chose.
