In these two books we read of the deaths of two women, under two opposite circumstances; one of sacrifice and no choice, and the other of suicide, two women who go from having everything to almost nothing. Deianeira in Sophocles' 'Women of Trachis is the wife of Heracles, and after years and years of pining after her far distant traveling husband she inadvertently kills him, and subsequently decides to take her own life too. Polyxena however, goes from being the daughter of King Priam to a Greek slave after the sack of Troy, and becomes a sacrifice to Achilles.
Deianeiras problems stem from the day that she was riding on Nessus shoulders, when crossing the river Evenus. Midstream the centaur began to grope her, and to remedy this Heracles shot him with a poisoned arrow. The centaur advised Deianeira to take the clotted blood from around my wound , telling her that it would capture Heracles heart and that he would therefore never look at another woman to love her more than yourself .
