Anthem for Doomed Youth and The Soldier Comparison Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In this assignment I am to contrast and compare the two of the above poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen and The Soldier by Rupert Brooke. They were both written at the time of World War One, and both of the poets fell victim to the war’s sharp scythe. Quite tragically death is the subject of the two poems. The word ‘die’ figures in the first verses of both of the works. Nevertheless, apart from their mutual subject as well as the identical poem structure – the are both sonnets – the poems have nothing in common at all – they contradict and challenge one another. In terms of imagery the two poems are quiet similar: they are both somewhat abstract and they rely on using symbolism rather than literalism. The subject that the two authors bring about is death, and therefore an abstract, imaginary approach seems in place for both cases. However, Wilfred Owen starts his poem in a very descriptive, graphic way. The poem begins ushering us onto the world of World War One – onto a nightmarish arena soaked in blood.
