Artistic Intentions and Morality Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

I am in a museum looking at a piece of art of an object I see on daily basis. I am filled with wonder as I look at the piece wondering what it is suppose to mean. With this I see that in purely philosophical terms, the precise nature of art’s links with morality has long been questioned. Some have found no link between art and morals whereas others have argued that the relationship is one that is quite prevalent. Here, it is argued that an essential component of the production of art can only be made sensible if taken along with the perceived moral codes that govern humanity. An example of a piece of art that shows much moral value is artwork done by Andy Warhol. When looking at a his paintings we can ask, does the intention of the artist matter or is it purely the content of the work and the effect on the viewer that is important. If a piece of art was made solely for the purpose of profit for the artist without real intentions, could we call this piece moral? Looking at this piece of art one should say that this should not be considered art but actually a commercial product. ......
