How Does Willy Russell Invite The Audience To Sympathise With Shirley Valentine? In the screenplay ‘Shirley Valentine’ written by Willy Russell, the author (Russell) bravely uses countless writing tools from iconography all the way down the list to personification to produce such an effective play which is heaving with a heart-warming theme of love, friendship and adventure. However this essay is not about the play itself; I will be explaining the techniques Russell used to invite the audience to sympathise with Shirley Valentine. Several techniques are used in the opening sequence to give the audience an idea of what the main character, Shirley will be like. One I personally like is the use of iconography; in the stage directions, a series of fifteen sketches are drawn which consist of Shirley Valentine doing various domestic activities. This helps the audience understand her role as a housewife however it does not surprise them as the play was first written in the year 1989; during that period women in society were expected to be housewives and had to obey these stereotypes......
