Kenyas failed 2007 General Elections Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

On the 27th of December 2007, Kenya voted for the fourth time since a multi-party system of democracy had been accepted amongst its citizens and political elites. After the problematic of the 2002 elections, which whilst largely deemed free and fair, failed to produce a clear winner, was only resolved by the seemingly democratic nature of the NARC unity coalition government of Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga, the international community and Kenyans alike held high expectations for a free and fair 2007 election (Dagne, 2008) (Harneit-Sievers, Michael-Peters, 2008) (Brown, 2004.). In fact it was because of the 2002 elections and the relative absence of large scale violence (Brown, 2004) that the 2007 elections were expected to occur in a relatively peaceful climate and to do so in a fair and efficient manner. Yet, as would become evident in the following weeks, the elections were neither free nor fair and the result would be catastrophic for the further consolidation of democracy in the east African powerhouse.
