Close your eyes for a moment and visualize your idea of a graffiti artist. What do you see? Do you see a hardened bandana wearing gang member, with a cigarette in his mouth? Or perhaps you see a crazy-haired heavily tattooed kid with a skateboard under his arm? Although there are graffiti artists that would certainly fit these stereotypes, youd be surprised to know that in a mixed crowd, most of these vandals would blend in with the average high school or college student demographic.
Sure, they can come from poor, broken homes, bad neighborhoods, and criminal backgrounds. But they can also come from affluent middle-class neighborhoods and happy, healthy homes. You can assume that they steal their supplies and cover expenses with theft or other crimes, but that would be an unfair judgment. I know of several artists who carry normal, respectable jobs and have a house in the suburbs, and a wife and kids at home.
