It was about one in the morning on January 20, 2001 and my step-dad, Pete, came
in my room telling me to hurry up Vanessa, wake up! I thought he was waking me up for
school and it was time for me to get ready. He wakes me up at six before he leaves for
work every morning, but then I looked at the clock with disbelief that it was only one.
The next thing I heard was Vanessa get up! Joey is in the hospital, he got into a really
bad car accident! I remember I felt as if I were falling from a tree, my heart just dropped,
and I couldnt breath. My life changed from that moment on.
My step-dad had left, telling me to stay calm and to take care of my little brother
Kyle and the house and that we didnt have to go to school that morning. I let Kyle sleep
because I didnt want him to worry. I hadnt really realized that my brother, Joey, might
die until about four oclock a.m. My mother called me and I could tell she was trying to
hold back her tears and stay strong for me. She told me, Joey is in a coma, with a
collapsed lung, broken ribs ......
