Imagine a landmark whose very existence is apparent in all of its inhabitants; A landmark with such omniscient character that it pulsed with life always affecting the lives of the people who thrived off of it. This is exactly the sort of atmosphere created by Charles Frazier in his award winning novel, Cold Mountain. This compelling novel tells the beautiful story of a literal journey of a confederate civil war deserter named Inman and the emotional and spiritual journey of his love Ada learning how to fend for herself in the wilderness that she had so easily existed in before the war. Throughout this story the Appalachian Mountains specifically cold mountain, which also serves for the protagonist’s home and the setting of the story, provides both main characters with a sense of comfort while they “travel” on their journeys. Both characters draw on memories from the past, mostly the times before the war broke out.
