Name recognition is the staple of communication. Individuality begins with unique names that separate people by verbal distinction. But at what age are young infants able to decipher from the extensive vocabulary their individual name? By the time that language is mastered it is assumed that every child easily recognizes their own name and realizes itÂ’s meaning, the distinct label referring directly to that child. But at what age to young infants make this connection between familiar sounds and a specific understanding of name. In a 1995 experiment, Denise Mandel and her team tried to answer just this. Broadly, Mandel wanted to test whether young infants (in the 4-5 month range) showed preference or recognition of their own names when compared to other similar sounds or unfamiliar sounds. Because preferential head turning and looking periods could be in response to a number of variables, Mandel examined stress patterns of the individual names and compared same stress names to differently stressed names.
