In The novel Great Expectations, Dickens shows pips unhappiness because pip
feels constantly guilty. One example of this is when he goes to visit his parents
and siblings at the graveyard on Christmas Eve.

Pips mother died at childbirth so Pip wasnt able to see or connect with his
mother and because of this he feels that he should have died instead of his
mother, having an ambition to bring his past into his future. If his mother had still
been alive, they may have had the close relationship like Pip wanted them to,
thinking of others before himself.
Pip hasnt experienced any time with his mother and father so by describing the
way their names have been written on their graves hes using his imagination to
combine what he sees with what he thinks to describe how his mother and
fathers personalities vary from his.
