In The novel Great Expectations, Dickens shows pip’s unhappiness because pip feels constantly guilty. One example of this is when he goes to visit his parents and siblings at the graveyard on Christmas Eve. “As I never saw my father or my mother, and never saw any likeness of either of them” Pip’s mother died at childbirth so Pip wasn’t able to see or connect with his mother and because of this he feels that he should have died instead of his mother, having an ambition to bring his past into his future. If his mother had still been alive, they may have had the close relationship like Pip wanted them to, thinking of others before himself.
