The Most Free - Generosity Within “The Franklin’s Tale” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

At the end of his tale, The Franklin asks a difficult question. It is a question about generosity. It asks us to examine the actions of his tale’s characters, and form the judgment “which is the most free”? It seems to be an easy question, but even after much thought it is not easy to answer. In The Franklin’s Tale I believe that there is not a clear answer to this question. I do however believe that it can be proven for three of the characters that they are all “free” as Chaucer wants us to see. The philosopher, Arveragus, and Aurelius all had noble intentions and acted just as noble on those intentions. Dorigen is the only character I do not consider to not be generous. The generosity of the other three characters is easily seen but also easily debated. I think the reason that there can be no clear one person that is “the most free” is because the proof is so easily debated. Arveragus leaves his wife in search of honor and glory and he returns to find that she has promised herself to another man. Arveragus allows himself the humiliation of appearing cheated on so ......
