Explain the view that Successful Families Need Two Loving Heterosexual Parents Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
It is undeniably difficult to define exactly what constitutes a successful family and indeed what the term family actually means. Depending on the interpretation being used, the explanation of this particular view will vary. Some would state that a successful family is one where the children grow older embracing the same norms and values of society and go onto work and have a family of their own, contributing to society as they do so. Such views are held by both the New Right and Functionalists, who go further and say that this is only possible if the traditional structure of the nuclear family is maintained. However, some may argue that a successful family can be any arrangement of parent/s and child/ren including lone-parent families, where the children then go forward to achieve their own goals, and perhaps having families of their own. This being a more Post-Modernist view and goes on to suggest that people can choose the way in which they form their family and that success is not necessarily measured upon the structure from which it is born.
