The Pre-Socratics were the first philosophers, in a line of others who followed, who rejected the idea of mythology. They refused to believe that those stories which their societies embraced, explained the nature of all things and the “Arche” of all. Thus each philosopher used his rational thought to attempt these questions relating to nature of existence and change. Different explanations emerged, as each one opted to take a diverse perspective towards existence and creation. In the case of the Pre-Socratics, the first explanations, related to the existence of a basic principle which formed the “cosmos”. This gave way to more complex theories such as the introduction of atoms, which take up the “nothingness” of Parmenides’ World. Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes sought to determine the basic principle which defined everything around them. These “phusikoi” diverged from the viewpoint that everything was in order only due to the interference of anthropomorphised gods.
