Texas Indians Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The population of the Texas Indians has greatly diminished over the years, leaving few descendents of the native culture. Although nearly extinct, the various Indian tribes which once inhabited Texas continue to live on threw history, allowing those few descendents who still remain to gain knowledge of their ancestry. The Texas Indians consisted of several tribes, which included The Caddo and The Atakapas. In each tribe, men and women were assigned similar duties, however, their construction of homes, religious beliefs, and techniques for obtaining food differed from one another. The way homes were assembled varied within each tribe. With an abundance of material cradling their villages, The Caddo had the advantage of building their residence with an architectural outline. Smallwood further describes these detailed homes saying “ [t]ree branches furnished the frames…[b]undles of cane provided roofing…then covered with grass to keep out the rain” (19).
