In William Faulkners, Absalom, Absalom, racism played a major part in the lives of the characters. In one way or another they were all affected by it, whether they had racist tendencies themselves or had others who were prejudiced against them. Absalom, Absalom depicted the issue of racism, which was very common in the south during the 1800s, by showing how it was a part of everyday life during this time. In this story we see how it led to the downfall of Thomas Sutpens dynasty.
Thomas Sutpen, as a teenager, had been offended when he was sent to go through the back door at the Pettibone plantation by a black man. Prior to this he had no understanding or knowledge of the different status levels in society. He felt humiliated since he wasnt a black servant yet he was still being sent to the back door. Sutpen decided that he wanted to make something of himself so he moved to Yoknapatawpha County and bought a hundred square miles from the Indians with all the money he had left to his name.
