Beloved by Toni Morrison Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Beloved by Toni Morrison raises the question whether one can love too much. The main character Sethe is told over and over not to love too much because in the end everything leaves, or is taken away. The novel circles around this question many times whenever the subject of love is approached often death is accompanying. Toni Morrison alludes to the fact that Sethe may have loved too much before, almost immediately in the novel. On page 5 the reader observes the tombstone that Sethe got for Beloved. Beloved’s grave symbolizes the death of the infant, but also the great love Sethe has for her daughter. In order to pay for the engraving on the tombstone, Sethe had to sleep with the engraver. She slept with him for ten minutes in order to have one word put on the tomb. She chose the word Beloved, because it was the one word that stuck with her when the priest read the eulogy. Another example of Sethe loving too much is on page 113, Beloved tries to kill Sethe by choking her. It is unclear whether Beloved was actually choking Sethe physically or psychically.
