Ordinary People Throughout life, we encounter numerous problems that we need to deal with individually. Sometimes, the way you approach your personal problem determines the outcome. In the book Ordinary People by Judith Guest, the characters seem to have different ways of solving their own problems. In our world today, there seems to be a lot of speculation on the thought of seeking professional help concerning a family problem. But is it really such a bad idea? A big theme in Ordinary People is how the characters handle their problems. A constant literary example that’s portrayed is the point of view. The point of view shifts between Jarrett, Conrad, and Calvin. The reader gets two different perspectives on the events in the book. Usually, there’s a negative characteristic being told about Beth, Conrad’s mother and Calvin’s wife. Both see her as somewhat distant, but Calvin ignores this quality in her, while Conrad feels anger at her obvious lack of love for him. Conrad’s feelings toward his mother are influenced by his perception that she loved his brother more than ......
