Niccolo Machiavelli Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3rd, 1469 in Florence, Italy. He was one of the earliest political philosophers in the Renaissance. He wrote the book, The Prince in 1513 which stated, The prince should be as strong as a lion and as shrewd as a fox, and he may have to trick his enemies and his own people. The prince should do what was politically effective as opposed to morally right. With this being said, he came up with the line, The ends justify the means. This means that the result of the action is more important than what needs to be done to get the result. I agree that the ends justify the means, but I also think there is a point were the ends do not justify the means.
One example where I think the ends justify the means has to do with the Iraq War. President Bush agreed that it is okay to invade Iraq as long as our troops are purely defensive. The ends in this situation would be to reduce the risk of terrorist attacks. The means would be however President Bush reduces the risk of terrorist attacks is okay.
