In Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises, readers discover the post World War 1 era that is full of much adversity, immorality and loss of any hope and value for anything. The “War That Would End All Wars” is not often directly touched upon by Hemingway’s characters, but it is understandable by everything they do and say that what was produced by this war troubles them significantly. Analyzing the inhabitants of Hemingway’s novel, Robert O. Stephens states that "Hemingway's people live in a pragmatic world where independently existing values no longer prevail. Their values are tied to actions, to the deeds themselves which are moral or immoral, not to any outside ethical frame or reference.” His statement rings very much true for Jake Barnes, Lady Brett Ashley, and Michael Campbell, or Mike. The Buddha said that suffering was caused by desire, and that the cessation of desire also meant the cessation of suffering. The Buddha’s thoughts on suffering can be applied for each of the three mentioned characters, whose desires cause them to suffer, or the way Lady Brett Ash......
