Affirmative action is defined as the intentional inclusion of women and minorities in the workplace due to previous exclusion (Bennett & Hartman, 2007, p. 181). Because of affirmative action and laws like Title VII, the workforce has become more diverse with equal employment opportunities. This paper will address key elements concerning affirmative action as it applies to private and public sector employers and the interaction it has with the Title VII requirements of Equal Employment Opportunity. In addition, a discussion will include those employers who are subject to affirmative action plans and why, what the plans require employers to do and what happens if employers do not meet the goals of such plans.
