Big Cats of Africa Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The continent of Africa is widely recognized for its great variety of large land mammals. Some of the most notable species are the big cats. Three of the biggest and most dangerous are lions, cheetahs and leopards. These deadly predators are feared by the herbivores of the African plain and admired by its human inhabitants. All three of these felines use their unique abilities to survive in their harsh environment.
The smallest of the these cats are cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus). Weighing up to 145 lbs and growing to nearly 5 feet length, cheetahs need an extra advantage to become successful hunters. Fortunately for them, cheetahs are the fastest land mammals on Earth. Cheetahs can reach 45 miles per hour in less than three seconds and for a short period of time can reach a top speed of 64 miles per hour (nationalzoo.si.edu). Cheetahs use their blinding speed to catch their favorite foods; gazelle and young wildebeest. Hunting consists of stalking a heard from about 50 feet away and then singling out a weak individual to separate from the rest. Once caught, the victim is suffocated......
