Imagine it being below zero outside with three feet of snow on the ground and you have to get from Moscow or the capitol St. Petersburg to the far eastern part of Russia. How are you going to travel? There are only a handful of roads in existence and half are on top of frozen rivers. This is the dilemma that Russia encountered during the late 19th century. The solution to this problem is the Trans-Siberian Railway.
In 1889, Russian emperor Alexander II Nikolaevich began work on the plans for a railroad that was influencial to Russias present day success. Full-time construction started in 1891 under the supervision of his son, Alexander III and Sergei Witte, the personally appointed Director of Railroad Affairs. The project was construction much like our own railroad. In fact, the emporor sent Russian engineers to the United States to examine just how it was built. Then they hired Italians that built tunnels and constructed towns for them and other workers and families to live in.
