Sophies World by Jostein Gaardner Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the book Sophies World, by Jostein Gaardner, the lives and works of many of the greatest philosophers of the world are discussed and taught to Sophie. Each of these philosophers ideas, works, and lifetimes are briefly discussed and examined. This novel about the history of philosophy teaches the readers about the most famous philosophers in an interesting way that keeps the reader hooked to the gripping mystery at the same time.
One of the philosophers I found most interesting was Baruch Spinoza, who lived from 1632 to 1677. A member of the Jewish community in Amsterdam, Spinoza was excommunicated for the criticism of this established religion. Spinoza was also disowned by his family for the reason of heresy. Being the first to really criticize the bible, Spinoza believed that the bible was not wholly inspired by God. Spinoza also believed in seeing life in a new perspective, his personal perspective being that of eternity, meaning that one is only a molecule in the large sphere of natures life.
