One of the biggest tragedies in human history was the Great Irish Famine in Ireland that took place from 1845 to 1852. The population decreased twenty to twenty five percent during this time period. The best way to examine an event of this magnitude is to look at the causes of it. The three big causes of the famine were the large population growth, the blight, and the single crop economy. The biggest cause for the Great Famine was that Ireland was a single crop economy. The economy was extremely dependent on the potato crop. They became dependent on one crop because the families had small farms and they could only grow one crop. This came to be because families did not have much to leave their children. When a family’s children got married, they would divide the land between the inheriting sons. As a result of this many of the farms in Ireland were reduced to the size of one to five acres. These farms were only able to grow the potato crop. Not only was the potato the only source of income for many families but it was also their main source of food.
