Alcibiades as Dialectic Instrument in Platos Symposium Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Alcibiades’ speech in praise of Socrates (221C-222C) reflects, through the reversal between Alcibiades and Socrates vis-à-vis the roles of the lover and the beloved, the dialectical method by which Socrates taught his students, and features the devices of metaphor and irony to demonstrate the relationship between that which lies on the exterior and that which is hidden. The speech, which follows Socrates’ statement that the Form of Beauty exists independently of beautiful things, also addresses the question of what constitutes both exterior and interior beauty and which type is of more significance. The structure of the Symposium by which the principal characters successively deliver speeches in praise of Love allows the work to be read as a rhetorical debate among the gathering’s six participants. In this manner, the speeches would ordinarily be judged on their style as well as their substance.
