Over the years, baseball has become international, spreading to countries like, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, England, South Africa, Australia, Taiwan, Tunisia, and predominately Japan. Baseball is very popular in Japan today, but it did not have this popularity at its start. Japanese Baseball has changed and developed tremendously since its beginnings.
Baseball was introduced to Japan in 1873 by Horace Wilson, who was an American teacher living in Japan (Aylesworth 246-247). Baseball did not catch on immediately, but in 1878, Hiroshi Hiraoka brought baseball to the Japanese railways and formed Japan's first baseball team: the Shimbashi Athletic Club. The Shimbashi Athletic Club dominated all of the other teams that popped up in Japan. They participated in the first recorded international baseball game in Asia, winning 29-4 against the American team from the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club.
