Changing Interpretations of the myth of Leda and the Swan in Art Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The myth of the birth of Helen has many interpretations in literary pieces. There are also many such interpretations in art forms, with different views being portrayed, generally concurrent with the age in which they were created. Early paintings on vases (around 330BCE) show a more literal view of the myth. It was simply taken as ‘fact’ that it had occurred and it was quite ‘normal’. This is evident in the manner in which they have depicted Leda, the Swan (Zeus) and other important characters. Zeus, the ‘swan’, is painted proportionally in contrast to Leda; and as white, winged and beautiful. The white in particular shows his power in the divine realm and his purity. White swans are viewed as creatures of great beauty and grace, and this is how Zeus is descriptively painted. Leda is fully clothed in majestic robes that show her royalty and beauty; and she is upstanding. She is embracing the swan by holding his neck in her hands and stepping towards him.
