The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton was an immediate popular and critical success. It is a historical fiction work of social criticism against the tyrannous ideals of Old New York society. The world she depicts in this book is an important part of American history. It displays societys negative aspects on romance, Whartons nostalgic treatment of Old New York, and her ability to create a past age, and the use of mythological versions if Mary and Ellen. The novel is about a man named Newland Archer, who falls in love with his fiancées cousin and the cultured, permissive sensibility she represents, and then struggles between his passion for her and the demands of upper class New York (Riggs 3).
Society in the 1920s led the romance between Newland Archer and Ellen Olenska to failure.
