Poetry Comparisons between Plath's "Daddy" and "My Mistress" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the art of poetry there are many different aspects which make up a poem. Each poem may hold numerous variations of these aspects making every poem a unique one. When looking at the poems “Daddy” by Sylvia Plath and “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun” by William Shakespeare, each has its own distinct characteristics which contribute to the poems meaning. Taking rhyme, alliteration, and meter into consideration, we can see how each of these directly effects the ideas we perceive when interpreting the true meaning behind the poem. In the poem “Daddy”, the meter is not a smooth one at all. It is very irregular which directly represents the lifestyle Plath lives without her father. In an instant the mood goes from a slightly happy state to complete hatred towards her father. Each line is not consistently rhythmic with the next which becomes apparent during reading. The meter plays a very important role in contributing to the meaning of the poem. Also the rhyme scheme in the poem is mainly end rhymes, and it is consistent throughout the entire poem.
