Interest groups play a major role in the government of the United States. An interest group is a group of persons working together to support their particular cause. Some of these causes may include a piece of legislation, an industry or a special segment of society. They are found in almost all societies and all levels of government. There are different types of interest groups ranging from very small groups dealing with personal causes to very broad groups like the military.
There are an outrageous number of interest groups in the United States. This number has grown rapidly over time. There was a big increase in pro independence groups in the 1770s due to the American Revolution. In the 1830s and 1840s there were many people disgruntled about religious and anti-slavery issues. This also caused a rapid increase in interest groups. During the Industrial Revolution more interest groups developed. But it wasnt until the 1960s that the most rapid increase began.
