Philadelphia Campaign Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Philadelphia Campaign (1777-1778) In the winter of 1777-1778, American fortunes were at an all time low. The British had defeated George Washington and the Continental Army in both Brandywine and Germantown, captured the capital of Philadelphia, and drove General Washington's soldiers back into Valley Forge. Although the Philadelphia campaign was small in comparison to all other campaigns in the war in battles fought, casualties, and soldiers involved, its significance is not to be overlooked. Despite a number of setbacks and a weakened morale, the British were unable to totally defeat the rebellion marking the turning point in the American Revolution. In July of 1777, a fleet of 265 ships commanded by British General William Howe arrived at the mouth of the Elk River in Maryland. These ships set sail off of Sandy Hook, New Jersey carrying approximately 17,000 British Soldiers, supplies, and ammunition.
