"I look upon those who would deny others the right to urge and argue their position, however irksome and pernicious they may seem, as intellectual and moral cowards" (Hartley 26). Some people see book challenging as something only cowards would do while others believe that "every burned book enlightens the world" (Retting 59). A number of books have been either challenged or banned in the past. To Kill a Mockingbird, was among the "top ten most often challenged books" (Hartley 29). It was constantly challenged by "concerned parents, religious sects, minority groups, and conservatives who dislikes the bad portrayal of whites" (To Kill a Mockingbird 304). These people had a variety of reasons towards why To Kill a Mockingbird was challenged. The two biggest reasons were the reference to rape in a rape trial that occurs in the book and language. The people claimed that there was "profanity, questionable language, ungrammatical speech by character and, use of a black dialect" in the book (Johnson 15).
