Various methods exist to evaluate the performance of employees but without generalization. There is not even uniformity as to what these methods are called they are referred to as "types," "plans," "systems," "scales," as well as "methods." The only essential thing agreed upon is that there will be some kind of measuring device or scale, a processing procedure and some form on which to record the results.

According to Werther & Davis [1996:362] this method requires he rater to provide a subjective evaluation of an individual's performance along a scale from low to high. This method calls for the use of printed form. According to Ecker, Oulette and Macrae [1970: 143] numerous traits or performance factors are listed down the left hand side of the page. This list usually includes: personality, neatness, industry, initiative, accuracy, and quality of work, quantity of work, disposition, cooperativeness, judgment, and ability, to lead and direct others.
