The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje is a modern classic which clearly shows the way in which structure profoundly contributes to the meaning of the novel. Through a series of flashbacks, into the pasts of each of the four main characters, the reader is transported into stories of love, desert exploration, loss, friendship and betrayal.
