Macbeths Bloody Imagery William Shakespears, Macbeth, is a classic tragedy which significantly uses the image of blood to create desired effects. This repeated thread of imagery is essential for the development of both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as characters, the creation of a dark and violent atmosphere along with the themes of guilt and controlling reality. The image of blood is continually forced upon members of the audience, clearly showing that this thread of imagery is truly significant to the overall effect and perception of the play. The theme of guilt is constantly represented by the various images of blood. The audience first begins to see Macbeth's guilt developing before the murder of Duncan. As soon as he hears the witch's prophecy, his mind strays to bloody images of murder. Yet, while these thoughts of "horrible imaginings" brew inside Macbeths mind, he feels guilty for thinking such things as he is Duncan's "host" "kinsman and his subject."
