Introduction Already over one billion people use the internet for different purposes. On this account it has become an essential tool of globalizing the world of the 21st century. Internet giants such as eBay and Google are very powerful because their online services satisfy many needs of today's internet users. The purpose of this paper is to address whether eBay and Google exhibit monopolistic characteristics and if this is the case what can be done to ensure an efficient market outcome. Finally, it will evaluate if a free share in eBay's economic profit leads to a fair distribution of well-being among members of a society. Why may eBay be a monopoly but Google not? To be able to answer this question it must be examined whether the key conditions of a monopoly, namely (1) no close substitutes and (2) barriers to entry, can be applied to those two firms . (1) No close substitutes: The online auction market eBay enjoys the benefit of network effect (or network externality): the value of a trade platform increases with a greater number of buyers and sellers (Lele, 2007).
