Children of The River: Cultures and Traditions Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

A majority of the people in the world follow a culture based on their religion or region where they live. Different people have different cultures. Someone in Asia might celebrate the New Year differently than someone in America. In Children of the River, by Linda Crew, Sundara holds on to a handful of Cambodian traditions like speaking Khmer and French, and respecting her elders. But she will most likely follow American traditions like speaking English, dating boys that were not chosen for her, and going to sporting events. The hardest aspects of American culture to adapt to are, learning about sports, learning to speak English, and eating American foods. Mahatma Ghandi once said, "Adaptability is not imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation." This quote illustrates Ghandi's belief that to adapt you must change yourself, and not just imitate what you see happening. Sundara didn't just imitate the American lifestyle. She changed herself and her ways of life to become an American girl. Sundara held on to a handful of Cambodian traditions by the close of the novel.......
