'What is Willy Russell Telling Us About Class And Society In 1980's Britain in Blood Brothers and How?'
'Blood Brothers' is a successful West End musical with book, lyrics and music by Willy Russell. The narrative revolves around contrasting twin boys, separated at birth and forced to grow up on opposite sides of society. They grow up as friends, in ignorance of their blood relationship until the inevitable quarrel caused through class differences leads to the tragic outcome. Shrouded in superstition and sadness, it is a story of a class divide that breaks through blood and kin. Willy Russell demonstrates that education, living conditions, housing and wealth can all be affected as a direct result of your class and background. Russell has portrayed the darker side of 1980's Britain, in order to communicate the large social divide to the reader. He attempts to blame society for the death of the twins, Mickey and Eddie, and through the book, he explains that there is a vast difference between lower and upper class citizens.
