Witchcraft Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the book "Witches and Neighbors," by Robin Briggs, he speaks about early modern Europe where the witchcraft craze swept though many communities. Being named a witch led to thousands of lives lost due to neighbors and family members, along with the social divide of rich and poor, in making false accusations against one another of being a witch. Briggs never proves that witches are real; however, what he does show is how hard economic times can lead to people to place blame on one another. For example, when farmer's crops are damaged because of hail storms or the death of healthy farm animals for no apparent reason, the loss comes as a shock. This then creates an outrage against the people who had already been suspected as witches as the ones to get blamed for what was an act of nature.
Robin Briggs did his research for this book by finding various court transcripts of old witchcraft trials. What he noticed is that the vast majority of the suspected witches were tortured. The torture involved sleep deprivation, water drowning, beatings, and other means of torture. The tor......
