Contrast Kurtz's African Mistress with his intended. Are both negative portrayals of women? Describe how each function in the narrative. Does it make any difference in your interpretation to know that Conrad supported the woman's suffrage movement? Kurtz's Intended is his fiancé, and is effectively under the 'spell' of Kurtz's power. She believes him to be incontrovertibly blameless, and consequently she lives with an idealistic illusion of her future husband. His African mistress is a black woman whom Kurtz lavishes with his wealth whilst in the jungle, and although the word "mistress" is never used it is obvious to the reader that the two characters are having a relationship. There are many contrasts between the two women and the fact that they both appear to be stereotypical in nature and extremes of character make these contrasts more apparent. Kurtz's African mistress epitomises Kurtz's life in the jungle, she is wild and free, bejewelled and beautiful. His Intended, then, sums up his life before the jungle.
